GE 201: Introduction to Sociology
Sociology 201 is an introduction to the discipline of sociology. The focus of this course is to help students acquire a sociological perspective that will provide a way of viewing the world from a sociological lens. The sociological perspective will introduce the student to the influences of our culture, groups, organizations, and global aspects of society that influence our interaction with others. Students will learn the basic concepts in sociology including an introduction to theory, social institutions, stratification, and other topics. You will learn the three major perspectives and other important theories. You will learn how to apply those perspectives to the “real” world. During this course, you will learn the basic vocabulary of sociology, develop a better understanding of your world, and gain insight into your relationship with society.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
SLO1: Apply knowledge gained to real-world experience
SLO2: Express an understanding of the material
SLO3: Demonstrate a basic understanding of sociological theories, methods, and research
SLO4: Establish a sociological perspective about yourself and your role in the overall social structure
SLO5: Develop an understanding of the socialization process and how we become social beings
SLO6: Develop insight into the diverse ways in which people act, feel, think, and define their situations based on sociological aspects (i.e. social class, age, disability, race)

To complete this class successfully, you must be able to perform the following basic technical skills before starting the class

Completing online classes successfully can be challenging because they require self-discipline, time management, and self-motivation skills. To do so, students are expected to spend at least 6 hours per week on the class learning activities and assessments. Additional time may be needed for individual Zoom meetings and/or phone conversations with the Professor, if assistance is requested. Being able to balance school and outside life responsibilities is not easy. Not waiting until the last minute and completing class activities in small bites every day is helpful to ensure students stay on track with their learning.
Students are expected to log into their Canvas course room at least three times a week. This allows for course updates and feedback from the instructor in a timely manner.
