SA 231: Fundamentals of Practice

This course offers students activities, assignments, and simulated experiences covering the fundamentals of substance abuse counseling. Emphasis on effective communication, assessing strengths and needs, and service planning.
Student Learning Outcomes

Course Objectives: When you complete this course you will be able to:

  • Conduct and document a social history.
  • Assess strengths and needs of clients.
  • Recognize possible diagnoses as outlined in DSM-5.
  • Develop a service/treatment plan.
  • Identify issues that confront individuals in high-risk populations.

General Education Objectives: When the course is completed you will be able to:

  • Students will be able to use creative thinking (formulating new or original ideas).
  • Students will be able to express themselves through original writings, images, or objects.

Course Policies

Assignments
• You will receive various assignments throughout the quarter.
• All assignments must be submitted within required time frame. For example, Week 1
assignments must be submitted during Week 1.
• Missing assignments due to absence or other circumstances must be submitted within 1 week of
return.
• Failure to submit missing assignments within 1 week of return will result in an F on the missed
assignments.
• It is your responsibility to ask about missed assignments.

Exams
• Exams will consist of multiple-choice, short answer, and/or essay questions.
• All exams are timed.
• If you miss an exam, please contact instructor immediately.
• Missing exams due to absence or other circumstances must be submitted within 1 week upon
return.
• Failure to take missing exams within 1 week upon return will result in an F on the missed exams.
• The final exam will be comprehensive (covering all topics).

Student Expectations
  • It is your responsibility to learn that material provided. 
  • Please respect yourself, your instructor, and your classmates. 
  • Please read the assigned chapters in a timely manner and be prepared to discuss topics found in the textbook. 
  • All assignments must be submitted within the required time frame. For example, Week 1 assignments must be submitted during Week 1.Failure to do so will result in an F on the missed assignments. 
  • All late submissions of assignments will result in a penalty.

Emails will be responded to no later than 48 hours or by the end of business on Monday for mail received over the weekend.
