Student Requirements

A. The student is required to successfully complete 160 hours within the office(s) of the physician or the accredited hospital or clinic to which he or she has been assigned.  There is an on-going evaluation of the student’s performance of the required duties; this evaluation becomes part of the student’s permanent record.  This externship requirement provides a valuable on-the-job training experience utilizing community resources for the medical assisting graduate.

B. (1)  The student will be given a deadline to complete the required number of hours.  The completion deadline is 10 continuous weeks from the starting date.  If the student has not completed his/her number of hours by the deadline, the student will not be permitted to stay at that facility.  The student must then find another facility (on their own) to complete the required number of hours.  A new student will, then, be placed in that facility.  The facility will be notified of the completion date for each student and will not extend time to the student when the deadline is met.

(2)  If the student does not totally complete the required extern hours before six months are up, then the student must re-take Clinical Procedures II and the entire externship again

C. Students must have proof of PPD test and results of the test in order to participate in the externship program.

D. Student must perform a drug screen prior to starting any of their externship hours.  The instructor must have the results back with a result of negative before the first day of externship.  Students are not allowed to complete any hours without a drug screen result.

Communication
