ME 291: Electronic Health Records

This course provides comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the history, theory, and functional benefits of Electronic Health Records through practical applications with the use of medical software.
Prerequisites

WP 150 with 25+ WPM.

Student Learning Outcomes

Based on 2022 MAERB Standards and Guidelines for the Medical Assisting Educational Programs. Students should be able to complete the following competencies: 

Cognitive (Knowledge) 

  • understand the core functions of an electronic health record and their importance in documenting patient visits at the point of care.
  • compare different formats of electronic health records data.
  • describe the importance and benefits from a codified electronic health record.
  • catalog and retrieve documents and images from a digital image system.
  • understand the importance of electronic orders and results and using quick-pick list to order medications.
  • understand and use patient management and problem lists.
  • create graphs of lab results and vital signs in the chart.
  • work with a flow sheet.
  • understand how electronic health records preventive care systems work.
  • understand HIPAA privacy and security concepts.

Psychomotor (Skills)

VIII.P.1 Interpret information on an insurance card. 

VIII.P.1 Verify eligibility for services. 

VIII.P.3 Obtain precertification or preauthorization with documentation. 

VIII.P.4 Complete an insurance claim form. 

IX.P.1 Perform procedural coding. 

IX.P.2 Perform diagnostic coding. 

IX.P.3 Utilize medical necessity guidelines. 

X.P.2 Apply HIPAA rules in regard to: 

  a.  privacy 

  b. release of information 

X.P.3 Document patient care accurately in the medical record. 

X.P.4 Complete compliance reporting based on public health statutes. 

X.P.5 Report an illegal activity following the protocol established by the healthcare setting. 

X.P.6 Complete an incident report related to an error in patient care.

Course Policies

Incomplete Policy: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing the course.

CLASS ATTENDANCE:

In order to develop a good understanding of the program, it is necessary to attend class on a regular basis.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:  It is important to give those around you consideration and respect. It is difficult for some students to focus if there is talking and distraction. Therefore, there should be no talking or texting during class, especially during times of discussion. Phones should be turned off or on vibrate and put in a pocket, purse, or book bag until class ends. If a student is asked to refrain from talking and texting and continues to do so, the student will be asked to leave the class and will be marked absent for the day. Phone calls should be made before and after class, but if there is an emergency, a student should step into the hallway to take the call and return quietly when the call is completed.
Be sure to take care of personal issues before class begins.
