Pharmacology Syllabus

ME 286: Pharmacology

This course covers drug actions, the history of drug control in the U.S., routes of administration, drug preparations, dosage calculations, use of drug references, drug classifications, and interpretation of medication orders.
Prerequisite Courses
Student Learning Outcomes

Based on 2022 MAERB Standards and Guidelines for the Medical Assisting Educational Programs. Students should be able to complete the following competencies: 

Cognitive (Knowledge) 

  • restate an abbreviated history of drug use, manufacture, and legislation in the U.S. during the Twentieth Century.
  • relate this history to current pharmaceutical practices, patient attitudes, and drug abuse.
  • demonstrate knowledge of the actions of different classes of drugs.
  • utilize accurate pharmacology abbreviations.
  • apply pharmacology principles to prepare and administer oral and parenteral medications.
  • perform metric-apothecary conversions, and calculate appropriate drug dosages.
  • use drug references effectively.
  • maintain medication and immunization records.

Psychomotor (Skills) 

I.P.6 Administer oral medications. 

II.P.1 Calculate proper dosages of medication for administration. 

II.P.4 Apply mathematical computations to solve equations. 

II.P.5 Convert among measurement systems. 

Affective 

A.1 Demonstrate critical thinking skills.

Grading Scales

A = 90% - 100%                   

B = 80% -  89%         

C = 70% -  79%           

D = 60% -  69%         

F = below  60%   

For medical assistant students in order for he/she to pass the class must receive an average of 74% or above in the given course AND obtain an average score on all competency evaluations within the given course. CAAHEP accreditation requires 100% of all medical assisting graduates pass 100% of all competencies.
