Medical Coding III Syllabus

ME 203: Medical Coding III

Medical coding is the ability to translate medical terminology into medical codes. Coding III involves advanced ICD-9-CM (inpatient coding), along with the CPT coding system. Also a detailed coverage of ICD-10-CM. Medical Coding III includes tips for preparing for the CPC exam.

Student Learning Outcomes

 At the completion of this course, the student will be able to

  • Reference the international classification of disease, ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-CM clinical modification for obtaining a diagnosis code
  • Distinguish between a primary and secondary diagnosis code
  • Use actual case studies to find the diagnosis and procedure to code(abstract chart)
  • Use the CPT coding system for obtaining a procedure code

General Education Objectives: When the course is completed you will be able to:

  • Collaboration: the students will work together to create their study plan for the CPC exam

Course Policies

STUDENT EVALUATIONs:

     A.  A student's final grade will be determined by the average or grade in these

                Areas:   Tests and the Final Exam Score.

     B.  Examinations Evaluation.

    • Tests can only be attempted one time—
    • Missed exams will be permitted to be made up if I am contacted prior to test expiration time and must be made up within 1 week
    • Make-up exams must be scheduled by the student and instructor and must be completed within one week of missing exam.

     C.  Missing assignments must be made up within 1 week.

     D.  Finals will open the Thursday prior to finals week and will closed the Thursday of finals week.  Be

                watching for the time that they open.

Grading Scales

A = 90% - 100%                   

B = 80% -  89%         

C = 70% -  79%           

D = 60% -  69%         

F = below  60%  

Student Expectations
  • Attendance is very important as this course is a fast paced challenging course missing even one day could result in getting behind.
  • Final Examination is required, if exam is missed student will automatically get a Failing grade in the class.
  • If there is an appropriate and documented reason that you are unable to complete a class you might be eligible for an “Incomplete” final grade.  To be eligible for an incomplete you must be passing the class at the time of the final.  If you receive an Incomplete, you need to make arrangements with the instructor to complete your outstanding work as soon as possible.  Should an Incomplete remain unchanged past one year of the original course start date, it will automatically change to a failing grade.
