ME 181: Medical Terminology I

This course presents structure of basic medical terminology. Prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, special endings, plural forms, abbreviations, and symbols are included in the content. A word building system will be used to learn word parts that are used to construct and analyze new terms. This system provides the opportunity to decipher unfamiliar terms and check their spelling. Emphasis is placed on spelling, definition, usage, and pronunciation. Abbreviations will be introduced as related terms are presented.
Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Students will correctly spell a wide variety of medical terms.
  2. Students will accurately define various medical terms.
  3. Students will provide correct abbreviations for medical phrases, names, and labels.
  4. Students will be able to write and recognize proper singular and plural forms of medical terms.
  5. Students will construct correctly spelled medical terms from word parts and definitions.
  6. Students will pronounce a wide variety of medical terms accurately.

Course Policies

Incomplete Policy: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing the course.

For medical assistant students in order for he/she to pass the class must receive an average of 70% or above in the given course AND obtain an average score on all competency evaluations within the given course. CAAHEP accreditation requires 100% of all medical assisting graduates pass 100% of all competencies.
