Medical Billing II Syllabus

MB 201: Medical Billing II

This course prepares the student for the CPB exam with AAPC. The students will learn information related to billing, including HIPAA, health plans, ICD-10-CM, CPT, accounts receivable, and health plans (governmental and commercial.)

  1.  Understand the background in healthcare
  2. Provide an overview of HIPAA including privacy standards and transactions and code set standards
  3. Recognize standards for Conditions of Participation
  4. Recognize the difference between fraud and abuse
  5. Identify how the False Claim Act affects billing practices
  6. Review Federal regulations including Stark Law, Anti-Kickback, Healthcare Fraud Statute, and Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act Improvement Act
  7. Understand how the Truth in Lending Act affects collection efforts

General Education Objectives:

 Students will be able to compose effectively written communication

 Students will be able to deliver effective oral communication

Course Policies

Class Attendance:  Attendance is very important in any college classroom.  This is a fast paced challenging course .  Students are responsible for obtaining information regarding any assignments or testing that was missed during illness/absents.  You must contact me prior to the end of the module that you missed.

Incomplete Policy:  If there is an appropriate and documented reason that you are unable to complete a class you may be eligible for an “Incomplete” final grade.  To be eligible for an incomplete you must be passing the class at the time of the final.  If you receive an incomplete, you need to make arrangements with the instructor to complete your outstanding work as soon as possible.  Should an Incomplete remain unchanged past one (1) year of the original course start date, it will automatically change to a failing grade.

Need for Assistance:  If you have any conditions, such as a physical or learning disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as outlined, or which will require academic accommodations, please notify me as soon as possible.

Student Evaluation:

Points will be accumulated for assignments and tests that are given during this quarter.  A final exam will consist of 100 points and must be taken to complete the course.

Grading Scales

A = 90% - 100%                   

B = 80% -  89%         

C = 70% -  79%           

D = 60% -  69%         

F = below  60%
