DE 299: Dental Externship/ Practicum

This course assigns advanced students to work in a dental office to receive an actual clinical experience and to expand on their dental assisting skills.

Prerequisites

A minimum grade of C in major subject area is necessary to participate.

Student Learning Outcomes

Course Objectives: When the course is completed you will be able to:

  • name, number and describe all the primary and permanent teeth.
  • identify the individual teeth in any given patient’s mouth.
  • chart the clinical oral examination.
  • apply the proper methods of four-handed dentistry.
  • recognize the proper anesthesia called for, load the syringes correctly and dispose of hazardous waste properly.
  • apply and remove a rubber dam, as well as understand when the use of a rubber dam is preferred.
  • prepare the Tofflemier matrix bands in the correct manner for the tooth that is being prepared for restoration.
  • identify the function and type of a wide variety of hand instruments.
  • set up task- prepared procedural trays for:
    Prophylaxis
    Sealants
    Amalgam Restorations
    Fluoride Treatments
    Light-Cured Composite Restorations
    Orthodontic Procedures
    Oral and Periodontal Surgery
    POT (Post-Operative Treatment)
    Root Canals
    Crown and Bridge
  • identify and mix various dental cements and final impression material.
  • prepare amalgam.
  • take and pour up alginate impressions and fabricate temporary crowns.
  • prepare sealants and apply correctly.
  • take and process radiographs by using the bisecting and paralleling techniques.
  • be efficient in all and any tasks of the dental office.

Course Policies

Incomplete Policy: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing the course.

Instructor Requirements

  • A dental assistant major requires that you make a 74% or better in this class to complete the program.
  • There will be on make-up on tests.
  • Homework assignments are due the next scheduled class day.
  • You must be in class for the ENTIRE period.
  • NO children allowed EVER in class. Some material we discuss is not appropriate for children. If you bring a child to class, you will be asked to leave.
  • The student will receive a grade from the externship facility/dental office where he/she has been working each week for 15 hours. The student must attain 150 total hours under direct supervision of the dentist and you must keep a record of the hours worked each week. Your instructor has the timesheet that you will need. The dentist will evaluate the student for this portion of the course. An exit interview must be arranged by the student with the front office before graduation.
  • Lab coat and protective eye wear worn for this class.
