DE 292: Chairside Assisting

This course provides in-depth information concerning patient care in the dental practice. Students are made aware of OSHA regulations concerning instrument handling and sterilization and disease transmission. Students are prepared to handle medical, as well as dental, emergencies which might arise in the dental office. Oral disease control is covered, as are dental clinical charting systems. A brief history of dentistry and assisting is included.
Student Learning Outcomes

Course Objectives: When the course is completed you will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the transmission of various diseases in the dental office.
  • take vital signs
  • use proper barriers and sterilization methods for self and patient protection.
  • employ the OSHA- recommended Universal Precautions.
  • identify several emergency conditions that are likely to occur in the dental office and respond to these conditions.
  • name and number in the Universal numbering system both primary and permanent teeth.
  • clinically chart and record the clinical findings as reported by the dentist.
  • record the services rendered properly using the correct abbreviations.
  • understand the basics of the dental office as a dental assistant.

Course Policies

Incomplete Policy: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing the course.

Instructor Requirements

  • The Dental Assisting major requires that you make a 74% or better in this class to compete the major successfully.
  • There will be on make-up on chapter tests.
  • Homework assignments are due the next scheduled class day.

Student Evaluation: Students’ grades will be determined by their average grades in each of the following areas. Each will then be weighted based on the following:
