CS 235: Spreadsheet Applications

This course involves advanced application of spreadsheets as the solution for business problems. Numerical analysis and forecasting are taught along with charting figures and utilizing spreadsheet programs for database.
Student Learning Outcomes

Course Objectives: When the course is completed you will be able to:

  • initiate the common formula functions in Excel.
  • utilize appropriate advanced spreadsheet reporting features.

General Education Objectives: When the course is completed you will be able to:

  • incorporate appropriate listening techniques.

How does this class apply to your career?

Microsoft Excel advanced spreadsheets is utilized for:

  • Calculating budgets in the business
  • Accounting worksheets such as Income Statement, Balance Sheets and Owner’s Equity
  • Charting profits and forecasts with column, bar, line, or pie graphs.

Teaching Methodology: Lecture (and/or lecture reading material), and practical applications.

Instructional Materials

There is no formal textbook. All materials/information will be provided for completing this course.

Course Policies

Incomplete Policy: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing the course.

Missed Classes: As an active member of the class, your attendance is vital. You are responsible for obtaining material distributed on class days due to an absence.

Missed Tests/Quizzes: Tests to be given periodically throughout the quarter will be announced. (The instructor reserves the right to quiz announced and unannounced on lectured material; unannounced quiz cannot be made up.) Each test is taken only one time. Students will be permitted to make up one missed test. If more than one test is missed, a zero will be recorded for any additional tests not taken. The makeup schedule will be announced by the instructor.

Class Information: I can be contacted at the phone numbers listed or @huntingtonjuniorcollege.edu. I will respond to messages received between Monday 8 AM and Friday 1 PM within 24 hours. However, messages received after 1 PM Friday I will respond within 48 hours or no later than midnight Monday.

Need for Assistance: If you have any condition, such as a physical or learning disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined, or which will require academic accommodations, please notify me as soon as possible.

 

Student Evaluation: Points are accumulated for tests and quizzes. A final comprehensive exam must be taken to complete the course. Failure to take the final exam will result in a failing grade for the course.

Worksheet creation with Pie Chart is used for GE Assessment, Communication C: incorporate appropriate listening techniques.

 

Create absolute and mixed cell references and vlookup and hlookup formulas.

 

Create spreadsheets as instructed during lecture Complete supplemental exercises for complete learning theory.
 

 

Excel Computer Test for each subject matter.

 

Nine

Continue vlookup and hlookup formulas

Continue exercises with Computer Test on subject matter

 

Ten

Review for final exam and Makeup Tests

Complete review and makeup one missed test.

Communication

Emails will be responded to no later than 48 hours or by the end of business on Monday for mail received over the weekend.
