CS 101: Intro to Computers

This course surveys the fundamentals of data processing on microcomputers. Students gain understanding of and facility in using computer hardware, operating systems and common software applications through lecture, discussion, and hands-on practice. This course is intended to be practical and useful to any student, regardless of his or her major field of study.
Student Learning Outcomes

Course Objectives: When the course is completed you will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of computer terminology.
  • express a general knowledge of computer operating systems.
  • express a general knowledge of windows-based operating systems.
  • demonstrate knowledge of computer hardware and software.
  • express a general knowledge of Cloud Storage.
  • manage electronic communication.
  • create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.
  • create, navigate, and manage Microsoft Excel.
Instructional Materials

There is no formal textbook. All materials/information will be provided for completing this course.

Course Policies

Incomplete Policy: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing the course.

Missed Classes: As an active member of the class, your attendance is vital. You are responsible for obtaining material distributed on class days due to an absence.

Missed Tests/Quizzes: Tests to be given periodically throughout the quarter will be announced. (The instructor reserves the right to quiz announced and unannounced on lectured material; unannounced quiz cannot be made up.) Each quiz/test is taken only one time. Students will be permitted to make up one missed test. If more than one test is missed, a zero will be recorded for any additional tests not taken. The makeup schedule will be announced by the instructor.

Failure to take the final exam will result in a failing grade for the course.
